＜目次＞2018年10月17日から21日までの日程で、東京ビッグサイトにて経済産業省と新エネルギー・産業技術総合development機構（NEDO）が主催する「World Robot Summit（WRS）」というイベントが行われた。2年に1度行われ、「ロボット大賞」が発表される展示会「Japan Robot Week」と併催するかたちで行われた国主催のこのイベントは、東京オリンピックが行われる2020年に本番を予定しており、今回はそのプレイベントという位置付け。ちなみに本番の2020年は、愛知県国際展示場に会場を移し、10月に開催される予定だ。連載一覧▲ Close ▼ All display
WRSは4つのカテゴリーからなるロボット競技会「World Robot Challenge（WRC）」と、展示会「World Robot Expo（WRE）」から構成されている。競技会については各種報道が行われているとおりだが、講演も行われた。開催4日目にあたる10月20日に行われた講演で、個人的に特に印象に残る話題を提供してくれたのが、掃除ロボット「ルンバ」で知られるiRobot社 テクノロジー部門 副社長 クリス・ジョーンズ（Chris Jones）氏だ。メディア受けするような具体的な新しいモノの発表が行われたわけでもなく、あくまで考えかたに関する講演だったのでメディアでもあまり取り上げられていないようだが、筆者には改めて考えさせられるところが多かった。その感覚は日々強まっている。この場を借りて、簡単にレポートし、感想をまとめておきたい。ロボットにはさまざまな定義がある。代表的な考え方の一つが、周囲の環境をセンシングして、何をするかをプランニングして、アクチュエーターを使って実際に行動して環境側に働きかけるというものである。この3つを行う機械がロボットだ。そう考えると、ロボットという存在にはさまざまなありよう、かたちがありえる。たとえば、「ルンバ」のような個体もロボットだが、自動運転車や自動化倉庫などもロボットだ。さまざまなセンサーやアクチュエーターを備えて「スマート」化した家、スマートホームもそれ自体をロボットとみなせる。ジョーンズ氏は「さまざまなセンサーとアクチュエーターを備えた自宅」によって、非常に快適で利便性の高い、快適な家を作ることができるはずだ、と述べた。現在の「ルンバ」は、掃除したあとにホームポジションに戻るために、ベースステーションから発せられる赤外線を頼りにしている。十分に環境を把握し、理解できるセンシング能力があれば、自宅の間取りを把握することもできる。だが周辺環境は必ずしもロボットにとっては自明ではなく、変動も多い。スマートホームに対しては、これまでにも少なからぬ取り組みが続いて来た。近年では無線でアプライアンス同士の相互接続が可能になり、スマホ上のアプリで操作できるさまざまなコネクテッド製品が生まれつつある。しかしながら、わざわざmobileアプリを使って照明を消す必要は、そもそも存在しない。消費者からすれば、スイッチを押すほうがはるかに容易だし、直感的だ。また何より、デバイスを自分たち自身で接続しなければならないのは面倒くさい。ジョーンズ氏は、「一般的な消費者はVTRの時間設定さえ面倒くさがる」と指摘した。つまり、従来型のメーカー主導のスマートホームの取り組みは「消費者側がついてきていない」。「スマート」というくらいならユーザーは何も設定しなくても自分が望むことをやってほしいと臨むのが普通のユーザーだ。モーションセンサーを使った照明器具のような、シンプルな家が消費者には求められているという。ジョーンズ氏は、「シンプル、オートメイテッド、パーソナル」という3つのキーワードを挙げた。つまり、単純かつほぼ全自動で、多様な個別の好みに適応できなければならないというわけだ。いちいちユーザーが設定を入力しなくても、家のレイアウトや住人の趣味にあわせたスマートホームが次世代には出てくるはずだ。ただし、業界はまだこの段階に達していない。逆にいえば「膨大なチャンスがある」と見ていると述べた。ではセンシング、プランニング、アクチュエーションの3要素のなかで、欠けている技術は何か。ジョーンズ氏はセンシングとアクチュエーションはもう問題ないと語った。それらはもう十分にあり、欠けている要はこの両者をつなぐ「プランニング」の部分だという。つまり、利用者自身がプログラミングをして動作を設定したり調整したりする必要なく、スマートな家を実現するためのソリューションだ。スマートホームは物理的なものなので、物理世界を感知する、空間を理解する必要がある。かみ砕いていえば、どこに何があるかわかっていなければならない。iRobotの最新型ルンバは間取りを作り、レイアウト更新にも対応している。問題は、それらの情報をどのように家に入れていくかだ。コネクテッドデバイスはどこにあり、アクチュエータはどこにあるのかをシステムが把握できるようにしなければならない。しかもユーザーによる操作なしで、だ。自動化されたスマートホームを作ることは、これらの情報があれば簡単にできるようになる。【次ページ】アイロボット社CTOが語った「ロボティクスの考え方」「今後の技術の要」Recommended article
